This thesis is composed of two parts; part A describes phytochemical analysis plants namely Bongardia chrysogonum and rhazya stricta which resulted in the isolation and characterization of nine new constituents. In addition, seven known compounds are also isolation for the first time form the genus Bongardia. It is known that more than one type of alkaloids have been isolated from different plants. This is a unique example of the isolation of three different types of alkaloids from the same plant source. The new compounds isolation from B. chrysogonum are bonzakaline (1), 17-desoxo-cis-lamphroobine (2) , bongardine (3), acetyl bongardine (4), bongardamine (5), 3-O-[ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ²-D-glucopyranosy1-(1ÃÂÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ4)-ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ²-D-glucopyransoy1-(1ÃÂÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ4)-ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ±-L-arabinopyransoy1]- hederagenine (9). Seven known compounds are also isolated from the same species namely palmatrubine(6), lupanine (7), symphytoxide (10), leontoside D(11), 3-O-[ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ²-D-glucopyransoy1-(1ÃÂÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ4)- ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ±-L-arabinopyransoy1]- hederagenine 28-O-[ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ²-D-glucopyranosy1-(1ÃÂÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ6)-ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ²-D-glucopyransoy1] ester(12) hederacoside A (13) and leontoside A(14). Two new compounds isolated from rhazya stricta are 9-octadecenoic acid-(Z)-2-3-dihydroxyproy1 ester(15) and hexadecanoic acid-2-3- dihydroxyproy1 ester (16). Structure elucidation of the compounds was carried out by using different techniques including 1H-nmr, 13C, HMQC, HOHAHA and COSY 450. The substitution pattern was confirmed by NOE measurements. Stereo chemical assignments were made by applying HoreauÃÂÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs horeauÃÂÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs methods.
