Fatima, Iqbal (1986) STUDIES ON THE SAPONINS OF GUAIACUM OFFICINALE-L. PhD thesis, University of Karachi, Karachi.
Guaiacum officinale L. (N.O. Zygophyllaceae) is a medicinal and ornamental plant commonly cultivated in the gardens in Pakistan. The present thesis describes the isolation of nine new triterpenoid saponins namely guianin A, guaianin A1, guaianin A2, guaianin B-G from Guaiacum officiale L. (N.O. Zygophyllaceae). Two more saponins namely 3-0-[a-L-rhamnopyranosyl]-30-norolean-12,20(29)-dien-28-oic acid and guaianin, have been isolated which were reported earlier from this plant. The structure of guaianin C is proposed and the structures of gaianin A, Guaianin A1, Guainin B, Guaianin D and Guaianin E were determined. These are as follows 1) 3-0-[a-L-Rhamnopyranosyl (1-2)a-L-arabinopyranosyl]-30-norolean-12,20(29)-dien-28-oic acid (Guaianin A) (71).
