Abstract
The work embodied in this dissertation is mainly concerned with the isolation and characterization of natural chemical constituents having some biological importance. The isolated compounds were either new or previously been reported in the literature and they were characterized by various sophisticated spectroscopic techniques available at this institution. Although, many compounds were detected from various natural sources, but all of them could not be studied biologically due to the lack of amounts. However, some compounds were screened biologically and their results are described in their corresponding chapters.

The whole dissertation is divided in to two parts: Part-A deals with the isolation and characterization of some secondary metabolites from four Lamiaceous plants which were selected due to the historical and biological importance of family lamiaceae. Part-B describes the isolation and characterization of various metabolites from marine green alga collected from various coasts of Karachi (Arabian Sea).

Laimaceous Plants (Part-A) The part-A is comprised of five chapters: The first chapter entitled “Contribution of plants in human life and the role of family lamiaceae” describes the significance of terrestrical plants in human life for the cure of various diseases. The chapter also describes the biological importance of various members of the family lamiaceae and therefore, various quotations dedicated to this family are also included in the same chapter.
