Abstract This dissertation plans to investigate and explore ways and means to develop the aquarium fish industry from being import based to an export oriented one. Survey has shown that there are 70 aquarist shops thirteen small scale aquarium fish farmers and 3 accessories manufacturers in Pakistan. Moreover there are some fairly common subsidiary resources too, which can be used in aquaria. The present study shows that collecting and breeding of aquarium fishes as well as introduction of new decorative and ornamental materials have great economic potential. This has been proven by comparing the costs of imported and locally breeded fishes. The data used in this study is based upon the findings of field trips and surveys throughout the country and also upon observations made during experiments. A total of 43 marine and 44 freshwater fishes were studied and their export potential assessed. The parameters considered includes catching technique, aesthetic beauty and breeding habits. In addition pet keeping in Pakistan has been studied and recommendations have been given on how a seawater aquaria and freshwater aquaria could be maintained. Demand forecasting and marketing capability for domestic as well as export markets have also been studied. The demand in domestic market is different in the different income classes i.e. commercial, upper, middle and lower classes. The aquarium-maintaining trend is greater in 3.56 million urban housing units. Supply and demand projection for the domestic market has also been explored. This study shows that export of aquarium fishes from Pakistan is an economically viable activity.
