Abstract Photochemical studies on the chemical constituents of Buxus longifolia of Turkish origin were carried out for the first time by our group and have led to the isolation of eight new steroidal bases along with thirteen previously known alkaloids which were isolated for the first time from this plant and the phytochemical studies on Lilium condidum have led to the isolation of two secosolinidine type steroidal alkaloids, reported for the first time from this plant. Modern spectroscopic techniques including mass spectroscopy (EI, HREIMS FDMS etc), ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV), infra-red spectroscopy (IR), NMR spectroscopy including 1-H-NMR, 13-C-NMR, Broad-band, DEPT and COSY-45o and some other advanced NMR techniques were employed. These include inverse NMR experiments such as HMgC (one-bond C-H connectivity measurements), HMBC (multiple-bond C-H connectivity measurements) and HOHAHA (1H/1H short and long-range connectivity measurements). The stereochemistry of various asymmetric centres was established by NOE difference studies.
