Abstract
The thesis describes studies on the chemical constituents of Petchia ceylanica, Sophora giriffithii and Dehassia kurzil. Chemical investigations on these plants have led to the Isolation of ten new indote, lupine and benzylisoquinoline alkaloids. In addition ten more known indole alkaloids, steroid and lignans have been detected for the first time from these plants. 2D NMR studies of there known components have also been carried out. Modern spectroscopic techniques including two dimensional NMR experiments (COSY-45, 2D-J-resolved, NOESY, HeteroCOSY, HMQC, HMBC, HOHAHA) were employed to elucidate the structure of the above mentioned compounds. DEPT and GASPE experiments were carried out to determine the multiplicities of the carbon atoms. The stereochemistry of the various a symmetric centres were established by extensive NOE difference measurements.
