Abstract
The present doctoral thesis describes phytochemical studies on two medicinally important plants of Pakistani origin namely Physalis peruviana Linn and Duranta repens Linn. Phytochemical investigations of Physalis peruviana have resulted in the isolation of eight new compounds (51-58) belonging to withanolide class of natural products. In addition, six known compounds of the same class have also been isolated for the first time from this plant: withaphysanolide (59), viscosalactone B (60), withaperuvin F (61), coagulin (62), physalolactone B (63) physalolactone B Glucoside (64). Phytochemical studies on Duranta repens have led to the isolation of a new steroid (74), along with six known compounds: lupeol (75), betulin (76), ÃÂÃÂÃÂò-sitosterol (77),ÃÂÃÂÃÂò-sitosterol glucoside (78), stigmasterol (79) and stigmasterol glucoside (80). The identity of new compounds was determined by a combination of spectroscopic data including various 2D NMR experiments and chemical transformations.
