Abstract

The work described in the present thesis is mainly concerned with the isolation and structural elucidation of triterpenoids and saponins presents in Achras Sapota. The thesis begins with the introduction to the Chemistry of Natural Product surveying its historical background, economic and medicinal importance. This is followed by literature survey of the plant under investigation – Achras sapota. The Experimental Section deals with the isolations of the constituents present in the leaves, bark and the seeds (cotyledons) of Achras sapota. As a result of these investigations we have been able to isolate fourteen triterpenoids from the non-polar extracts of two parts of the plant namely the leaves and bark and five triterpenoidal saponins from the polar extracts of the seeds (cotyledons). Of the five saponins isolated in the present work, one has been previously reported in literature while the other four are been reported for the first time from this source. The characterization of the triterpenoids and the saponins isolated is described under the section, ‘Results and Discussion’. Mainly physical methods i.e. Mass spectrometry and 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopy were employed for the structural elucidation of the triterpenoids and the saponins. The saponins isolated have been designated as Achras saponins A,B,C,D and E.
