The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part describes the studies on the chemical constituents of Rhazya Striecta. Investigations on the alkalodial contents of the leaves of R.Stricta have led to the isolation and identification of eleven new indole basis. In addition three more established bases have been detected for the first time in this plant. Spectral studies on phanimal, strictamine and strictosamide, were also carried out. These studies have resulted in the isolation and structure elucidation of the following compounds of diverse nature: Cycloxobuxoviricine (97)- A New Steroidal Alkloid from Buxus Papiloea J.Nat.Pred. 49 106 (1986) Buxominel-B (98)- A known Steroidal Alkaloid from Buxus Papilcea J.Nat.Prod. 49, 106, (1986) Alioline (99)-A Novel Alkaloid from Catharanthus Roseus. Tetrahedron Submitted for publication. Nigellimine N-oxide (100)-A new Isoquinoline Alkaloid from Nigella sativa Neterocycles. 23 953 (1985) Modern spectroscopic techniques including two-dimensional NMB experiments (COSY-45, 2D J-resolved, NOESY and Hetere-COSY) were employed to elucidate the structures of the above mentioned compounds. DEPT and GASPE experiments were carried out to determine the multiplicities of the carbon atoms. The stereochemistry of various asymmetric centers was established by extensive NOE difference measurements.
