Abstract
The first chapter of this thesis with the biosynthesis of terpenoids, formation of isopentene unit, biosynthesis of diterpene and triterpene. Saponins and sapogenins have been reviewed in the second chapter. Biological and medicinal importances of saponins as well as structure determination of aglycone and suger moieties are also described.

An upto-date literature survey and results of present photochemical investigations on Mangifera indica have been included in the third chapter. This chapter deals with the isolation of triterpenes, saponins, chromones and other phenolic compounds. The compounds isolated and identified from root bark of Mangifera indica, are indicanine are new cycloartane type triterpenes, which have not so far been reported in the literature. The dried stem bark of this yielded two new saponins mangifericine-A mangifericine-B.

The flowers of Maginera indica afforded constituents of steroidal and non-steroidal nature while the phenolic constituents are chromones and alkyl gallates, basides a veriety of amino acids and sugars. A brief account of this work is shown in table 1-5. An epimer of taraxerol has also been isolated.

The structures of these natural products were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data together with comparison with published data of authentic samples (wherever possible).

A list of the new and known compounds isolated as a result of present research work from root bark, stem bark and flowers of Mangifera indica is given below.
