Abstract The rural settlements in the immediate hinterland of the Karachi metropolitan area have been of late undergoing rapid changes – a trend which emerged only recently, that is, in the short period of last 10-15 years. Considerable changes have been identified in the structural, morphological and functional patterns, and are exemplified by seven settlements pre-selected for analysis. The change signifies a trend of rural-urban transition which seems to have over-taken some of them. The study unfolds the process of so-called “predefinitive urbanization” as demonstrated in the area, in a three dimensional approach and a theoretical frame-work involving empirical analysis and discrimination. The study is divided into nine chapters. The first three represent the normal concern and occupation which the objectives, theoretical frame and methodological aspects. Following these a background of the general characteristics of the area and the settlements has been inducted. This is followed by a cross-section analysis of the settlements with respect to their structural, morphological and functional changes. Chapter five discusses the structural change – changes of occupational structure and the relationship of the age structure of the active male population to the change and the various stages or states of the transition. Chapter six is concerned with occupational movements and the patterns of occupational change. Chapter seven analysis the spatical aspect of the structural change, the trends in the distribution of work places and the significance of the emerging employment zones distinct from the traditional areas of rural employment. Chapter eight is mostly devoted to house type changes and trends and gives a concise description of the internal patterns and their changes. Chapter nine analyses the functional bases and the significance of the service centres for the structural changes characteristic of predefinitive urbanization.
