Abstract

Pakistani society, particularly the urban society, is fast changing due to advancement of technologies and similar other forces. The old structure is breaking down. New ideas and values are coming up. Due to change in the social structure the symptoms of numerous pathological and psychological problems related to western ( free world ) urban civilization are appearing. Therefore there is need to address all issues as related to families. In this research an arduous attempt has been made to present various areas of internal family life which may facilities assessment of family structure and functioning. It has become imperative to understand the dynamics of a family before planning and family centered intervention. Some of the major variables related to structure and functions of family i.e. family structure, authority pattern, husband wife relationship, parents child relationship, family traditions, family strength, family crisis, status of women etc, as suggested by family scholars are discussed in the present research among the families of three social classes in Karachi.
