Abstract
The present thesis is divided into two parts. The first part entitled “Studies on the Chemical Constituents of prospis julflora DC.” Describes the isolation and structure of four new piperdine alkaloids as well as a novel terpenoidal compounds. These are as follows :-

N-methyl julifloridine (I) Projuline (II) Prosopinoline (III) Juliprosinene(IV)

Terpenoidal Compounds Prosopidione (V)

There more alkaloids namely juliflorine (Juliprosopine), julifloricine and julifloridine already reported from this plant, have also been isolated. The structure of these compounds have been elucidated on the basis of modern spectroscopic methods including UV, IR, mass and NMR (1H, 13C and 2D), as well as through chemical studies.

The second part of the thesis entitled “Further studies on the Chemical Constituents of pluchea arguta Boiss (compositeae)” describes the isolation of three novel eudesmane type of sesquiterpenes. These are as follows.

Pluchidione (I) Pluchidinol (II) 11,12,13 trinir-3-4-diepicuauthemone (III)

Moreover a known sesquiterpene, plucheinol (15) was also isolated. Beside this three triterpenes, B-sitosterol, taraxasterol acetate, taraxasterol and vanillic acid were also isolated, and characterized, which have not been reported previously from this plant. The structure of these compounds have been studied on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical studies.
