Abstract

This study discusses the farming of the U.S. image in Pakistani press and suggests a model that explains the ideological position of Pakistani press vis-à-vis the U.S. foreign policy in cold war period. This study throws light on a highly important era of the U.S. - Pakistan relations ranging from highly critical relationship to a front line state after September 11 attacks. This study proposes a “Press Farming and Country’s Image Relationship Model”. This model explains how Pakistani press framed foreign countries’ image, especially the U.S. image in Pakistan with reference to press-foreign policy relationships. It also provides an overview of the U.S. - Pakistan relations from 1947 to 2004 and includes a detailed analysis of the major issues in the U.S. – Pakistan relation and also highlights the inconsistent pattern of the U.S. foreign policy towards Pakistan by using content analysis methodology. It presents a summary of relevant literature of various countries’ image in foreign policy context. Further, this study focuses on the U.S. official statements, proclamations, presidential speeches related to the U.S. policy towards Pakistan and the treatment of policy in the unsigned editorials of Dawn, The Nation, and the News on topics: A- the U.S. policy towards Pakistan with reference to terrorism and Afghanistan; B- the U.S. policy towards Pakistan’s nuclear program; and C- the U.S. position on the Kashmir issue. The concluding remarks of this study establish links between previous studies and the findings of this study on the particular subject and also provide a list of hypotheses for future research.
