Abstract
This thesis aims at studying nationalism in Pakistani criticism. When Pakistan came into being Progressive Movement was blooming enough to impact Urdu criticism. Also in currency were Halqa Arbab-i-Zauq rules of criticism influenced by philosophy and psychology and foreign literature, which the Progressives won’t accept. In the 50s, a group of litertai emerged which felt the need for a separate recognition of Pakistani literature, which mirrored the aspirations of the new nation. This decade saw the emergence of Pakistani and Islamic literary movements, which could not last longer but they did produce a new Pakistani national ethos.
