Abstract
Diallel analysis is a good mean of studying genetic behavior of traits. The experiment was conducted at the Malahendhere Farm, NWFP, Agricultural University , Peshawar to evaluate the performance of eight spring wheat genotypes; viz Khatakwal, Fakhre Sarhad, Ghazzavi-98, inqilab-91,Takbeer, Tatara, Prirsabak-85 and Idaho-458, in an 8x8 diallel combinations under irrigate and late drought conditions. Data were collected on days to 50% heading, flag leaf area, plant height, number of spikes per plant, length, days to maturity, harvest index, grin yield per plant, number of grains per spike, grain weight per spike and 1000-grain weight. Highly significant differences were observed among the genotypes for all the traits under both conditions. In pooled analysis, genotype x environment interactions was significant for all the traits except days to 50% heading, days to maturity and spike length. Tatara showed bent performance under both irrigated and late drought conditions for most of the traits. Considerable crosses under irrigated condition were Tat x Tkb, PS x KW, Inq x GZ, Tat x Tkb x KW, Inq x PS, GZ x Tkb, Inq x KW, Tat x KW, PS x Inq. In diallel analysis both additive (a) and dominant (b) genetic effects were found significant for all the traits. Analysis of genetic components revealed that under irrigate conditions both additive (D) and dominant (H) genetic variation were significant for all the characters except harvest index and grain yield per plant where additive dominant effects were found significant for all the traits except days to maturity for which only additive effects were significant while for number of grains per spike and grain weight per spike only dominant effects were found significant. Combining ability analysis revealed that under both conditions mean squares due to GCA and SCA were highly significant for all the characters. However, GCA mean squares were greater than SCA mean squares indicating the preponderance of additive genetic effects for these characters. Under irrigated conditions high heterosis and heterobeltiosis were indicate by cross combinations of Tkb x ID, Inq x GZ, Tat x Tkb x KW, Tkb x Inq, KW x Tkb, ID x FS, Tat, GZ x KW, and ID x Tat.
