Abstract Seraiki is an ancient language with a prestigious intellectual history and a rich literature, especially poetry. Seraiki has a very rich tradition of oral literature but rather less of it was historically committed to writing. First two chapters deal with the language and its folk heritage. Seraiki poetry has a wide scope. Most of it is in the form of marsya, elegiac poem written to commemorate the martyrdom and valour of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his comrades of the Karbala. The one-thousand-year history of Seraiki Poetry has been divided into four periods, the latest being the one after 1947 independence of Pakistan.
