Abstract

This experiment was conducted at the research farm of NWFP Agriculture University, Peshawar during 2001-2003 to study inheritance of yield and related traits studies in beard wheat(Triticum aestivum .L) using 8x8 diallel analysis. The component analysis indicated significant additive genetic component (D) for all the traits except tillers per plant and yield per plant. The dominance component (H) was significant for days to heading, tillers per plant, spike length and yield per plant but non-significant for rest of the traits. However, the magnitude of the additive components was greater indicating the preponderance of additive variation in controlling the characters studied. Graphical analysis revealed additive gene action for days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, grains per spike, 1000 grains weight and harvest index. While over dominance gene action of flag leaf area, tillers per plant, spike length and yield per plant. The GCA mean squares were significant for all traits except tiller per plant and yield per plant and were great than SCA mean squares indicating the preponderance of additive genetic effects. The parents Tkb, Tat, Sarc-3 and SQ-92 were goods general combiners. Among the crosses, high SCA effects were shown by GZxICP for days to heading, Tat x SQ for days to maturity and spike length, SQ x ICP for flag leaf area and harvest index, Tat x for tillers per plant and SQ x Dera for yield per plant .High mid peent and better parent heterosis were exhibited by cross combination, GZ x Dera for days to heading, SQ x ICP for flag leag area, ICP x Tat(MP and SQ x ICP(BP) for 1000 grain weight, SQ x Dera for spike length, SQ x Tkb (MP and Tkb x Dera(BP for grain per spike. The parent Tkb, Tat, Sarc-3 and SQ-92 ad the specific crosses that showed high mid parent and better parent heterosis are recommended fro further use in wheat breeding programmes.
