Abstract Chili veinnal mottle potyvirus(Chi VMV)is the major prevalent virus found throughout chili growing areas of Pakistan. The surveys conducted during 2003 and 2004 showed relative occurrence of 44.7 percent. Highest relative occurrence of Chi VMV was recorded in sindh(47.3) percent and Punjab (46.9 percent) followed by NWFP(41.3 percent) and Balochistan (35.7 percent). No district was found free from the viral infection in sindh and Punjab. However, samples from few locations of NWFP (Dir, Bajour Agency, and Lakky Marwat District) and Balochistan (Kachi and Loralai districts) were found free from Chi VMV infection. Among weed flora of chili pepper, only Datura metel was found infected in Punjab under field conditions.
