Abstract |

|
Evidence is accumulating that selenium is an essential trace element for human beings. The low contents of selenium in human beings can cause number of diseases, like cancer and Keshan disease. In this investigation, an attempt has been made to evaluate the selenium content of normal of Lahore Metropolitan area including cantonment area and suburbs of Lahore. This will give a fair picture of the intake of selenium in general population of Pakistan. The calculations of selenium intake usually overestimate the selenium consumption. Fruit, vegetables, grains, cereals, sugar, eggs, fish, meat, mutton, beef, milk, spices, blood samples, urine samples of diseased persons like cancer, heart and healthy cohort have been analyzed for selenium content. The daily intake of people ranges from 41.18 to 52.07 ug/day. Average values of concentration level in different food stuffs were determined by Shimadzu Sequential type plasma emission spectrometer model ICPS-1000 III and by ICPS JY-24. The Food and Nutrition board of the National Research Council suggested a safe and adequate range between 50-200 ug/day of selenium intake for adults. Our daily intake of se1enium in Pakistan is on the border line. Therefore, the total intake and the amounts of selenium in major foods were lower. This is probably due to low level of this element in Pakistan soil. Our data demonstrate the blood selenium concentration level in healthy population in the range (0.075-0.080 ug/mL) against the reported range 0.10 to 0.34 ug/mL of whole blood selenium and against the marginal deficient range (0.05-0.09 ug/mL) of blood selenium. So Pakistani population in general may be placed in the marginally deficient range. However, in smokers and cancer patients the blood selenium range is very low and in heart patients it is also low, whereas selenium excretion through urine varies irregularly. The blood selenium level in Pakistani healthy population and diseased cohort can be made better through high selenium food intake or by selenium supplement or mineral tablets. The data fairly represents the selenium rich fruits, vegetables, eggs, fish, chicken, mutton, other food and food additives. |
