Abstract

The work embodied in this thesis describes the isolation and structural elucidation natural compounds from two species of genus Salvia. The genus Salvia belongs to the family Lamiaceae (Labiateae). In Pakistan, both the species have been used as a tradional medicine for the cure of different diseases. The work on Salvia bucharica resulted in the isolation and characterization of eight new constituents. Out of eight five are of novel skeleton, three were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. In addition to new constituents, 13 known compounds have also been solated and characterized first time from this species. The new constituents isolated from Salvia bucharica are isoperadione (1). salvadione-A (2), salvadione-B (3), salvatrione (4), salvadiol (5), buchariol (6), buchariate (7) and bucharioside (8). The compounds isolated for the first time from Salvia. bucharica are: perovskone (9), peradione (10), lupeol (11), oleanolic acid (12), salvigenin (13), crisilineol (14), 5-hydroxy,4',7-dimethoxyflavone (15), apigenin (16), 7-O-B-D-glucopyranosylapigenin (17), stigmasterol (18), stigmasterol glucoside (19), B-sitosterol (20) and f3-sitosterol glucoside (21). The phytochemical investigation on Salvia moorcroftiana, specie of the same genus (Salvia) resulted in the isolation of four compounds, they include: B-amyrin (22) 15-deoxyfuerstione (23), erythrodiol (24) and luteolin-7-methyl ether (25), which have never been isolated so far from this investigated source. The structure elucidation of all isolated compounds described in this disertation were carried out by using various spectroscopic techniques including single crystal X-ray crystallography, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, HMQC, HMBC, COSY-45°, nOe, El, CI, FD, -ve and +ve FABS, IR and UV etc.
