Abstract

Family Cheyletidae of mites was created by Leach in 1915. Several revisions were attempted by a large number of acarologists. Mites belonging to the family Cheyletidae are good predators of harmful mites and small insects. In Pakistan a total of 55 species of the family Cheyletidae have been described. It forms a small fraction of the total Cheyletid mite world fauna. This big gap in the knowledge of Cheyletid mite fauna and their great potential in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as a biological control agent necessitated the present research. The taxonomic study reported in this thesis includes 28 species belonging to five genera of the family Cheyletidae. Twenty three species are new to science while five are already described. The already described species namely Cheletogenes iconis Mustafa; C.vulgatus Rasool & Chaudhri; C.carinatus Mustafa; Acaropsis orbis Qayyum &, Chaudhri; Cheyletus desitus Qayyum & Chaudhri have been provided with new distributional records and new hosts. A new genus Balochicheyla has been erected in the family Cheyletidae, with the description of one new species in it. The 23 new species described in this study are Balochicheyla odoratus n.sp.; Cheletogenes roridus, n.sp.; C. tentus, n.sp.; C. modicus, n.sp.; C. confultus, n.sp.; C. cautus, n.sp.; C. parilis, n.sp. C.arvalis, n.sp.; Grallacheles ebrius, n.sp.; Acaropsis semper, n.sp.; A. atavus, n.sp.; A. delicatus, n.sp.; A. recisus, n.sp.; A. decus, n.sp.; A. decus, n.sp. (male); A.ferocis, n.sp.; Cheyletus umbo, n.sp.; C. tagatus, n.sp.; C. ambula, n.sp.; C. scopa, n.sp.; C. marasus, n.sp.; C. rimator, n.sp.; C. sarsina, n.sp.; C. linitus, n.sp. Identification keys for the genera and species, described herein, have been prepared. Tables showing comparison of characters and similarity matrices are prepared and phenograms to study the level of phenetic affinity among the various species of genera Cheletogenes, Acaropsis and Cheyletus have been constructed. Maps of Pakistan showing geographical distribution of described species for each genus are also included and the results have been discussed.
