Abstract

The Saur revolution in 1978 was one of the major regional changes taking place across the border in Afghanistan. It was a revolution from above brought by a number of the Afghan officers in the army and air force. Powers were soon handed over to the Soviet backed People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) which was a progressive and believed in the rapid social and political changes in Afghanistan. The changes the PDPA rulers introduced soon after one another led to the popular resistance to the government. The resistance provided external support by the US led western countries and its allies resulted in a full fledged counterrevolution. The counterrevolution was exported across the border in Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 to a low-intensity guerrilla war against the Soviet forces until 1989. The war brought major disasters to Afghan society, including a huge migration to the neighboring countries. The greater calamity on Afghan society was inflicted, however, after the withdrawal of Soviet forces and fall of Najibullah three years later when it entered into a civil war among the leading Mujahideen groups. To the latest report at the time of the submission of the paper, Afghanistan is divided into war zones with three groups as the holds of powers: Taliban, Hizb-e-Islami of Hikmatyar, and Jamiat e Islam of Rabbani. The alliance of power configuration between Rabbani and Hikmatyar against Taliban is the formation of a unified stand against Taliban. Afghanistan will have more rounds of civil/internal wars, and will lead to distintegration of Afghanistan into two or three blocs.
