Abstract

The family Buxus comprises 20 species of evergreen shrubs distributed in different parts of the world. Two distinct forms occur in Indo-Pakistan sub-continent, Buxus papillosa C.K. Schneider and Buxus wallichinana. Buxus papillsoa is a large shrub found in northern areas of Pakistan. The early work on this plant was done by G.A Miana and M. Shamma in 1973. Further studies on this plant have been pursued by our group and more than 50 new compounds have been isolated and characterized. Present work is also a continuation of the same and has led to the isolation and identification of five new steroidal bases, two of them bear a novel skeleton. Moreover, three other established bases were also isolated fro the first tome from this plant and their detailed spectral studies were carried out. In addition, studies on the leaves of Buxus Hildebrandtii were also carried out, which resulted in the isolation and identification of two other known steroidal alkaloids, not detected from this plant previously.
