Abstract
Studies on growth, yield and quality under different planting techniques, irrigation methods, water levels and mulch types in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) were carried out at the Sugarcane Research Institute, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Three field experiments were conducted each year during 2004 and 2005. In experiment-I, sugarcane variety, HSF-240 was tested to evaluate its growth, yield quality performance under different planting techniques i.e. sowing in 45 and 60 cm apart furrows, 60, 90 and 120 cm apart trenches. In experiment-II sugarcane variety HSF-240, sown in 120 cm apart deep trenches, was tested to study the effect of different irrigation methods i.e. skip and alternate skip irrigation methods with different water levels of 3000 and 2000 mm water ha-1, respectively against standard method of irrigation with water levels of 4000, 3000 and 2000 mm water ha-1. In experiment-III, the same sugarcane variety HSF-240 was tested to access the effect of mulch types i.e. plastic and bagasse as mulches with water levels of 3000 and 2000 mm water ha-1, respectively against standard irrigation method to all 120 cm trenches with water levels of 4000, 3000 and 2000 mm water ha-1. In each experiment, sugarcane variety HSF-240 was sown on well prepared seed bed during second week of February 2004 and 2005 using a seed rate of 75000 DBS ha-1. In experiment-I, the sugarcane was sown in pattern of 45 and 60 cm apart furrows, 60, 90 and 120 cm apart trenches. In experiment-II and III, sugarcane was planted in 120 cm apart trenches. All other agronomic practices such as fertilization, weeding and cultural practices were kept normal and uniform for all the treatments. All the experiments were laid out in RCBD with four replications and net plot size of 3.6 x 6.5 m. Observations on various agro-physiological and quality traits of sugarcane were recorded by using standard procedures. Recorded data were analysed statistically using Fisher's analysis of variance technique and LSD at 5% probability to compare the differences among treatments means.
