This thesis is an attempt to study from the research point of view the contribution of Shaukat Siddqui in the perspective of fiction writing in Urdu. From long and short tales to modern fiction vast and precious material is available .The impetus given by the Prem Chand and Sajjad Haider Yaldram in the wake of 20th century, continued to grow. The fiction in Urdu reveals influences of wide series of social reforms, romanticism, naturalism and social realism. Between Prem Cahnd and Shaukat Siqqqui, fiction went through different stages of evolution. In modern fiction Shaukat Siddiqui is quite a prominent name for his themes, ideas and craftsmanship. Some of his writing has been translated into various languages of the world. In the way the novels and short stories of Shauket Siddqui are appreciated and translated in the foreign countries, we find the research work within the country , disappointing. This urged me to undertake this work. This article has seven chapters. In the first chapter fiction in Urdu till the beginning of 20th century has been reviewed. The famous long and short tales along the contribution of Fort William College are analyzed. The changes in life of sub continent after 1857 AD , the Aligarh Movemewnt, the tilt from conservation to modernism , the beginning of novel and short story writing in Urdu and the influence of social reforms are discussed. The sign of social and political changes up to the beginning of 20th century and the growing influences if the English and Western literature on Urdu fiction are pointed out. In the second chapter the emergence of new era , the social and political events and their influences on Urdu fiction and changes in forms and themes are taken into account. The awareness created by the social reforms, their effects and results are critically analyzed. The publication of Angaray and the origin and development of progressive movement is reviewed. In the third chapter the personality of Shauket Siddiqui , the particulars of his life, his social back ground, his ideas and thoughts are discussed and his stories dramas and his other writing are described. In the fourth chapter the study of techniques of Shauket Siddquie with reference to the movement of realism, his formation of characters, arrangement of setting and sequence events and social foundation of reality are discussed. The way his ideas are interlinked with his conception of art is reviewed. In the fifth chapter the contemporaries of Shaukat Siqqui are identified and discussed. A comparative study and survey of contemporary of Urdu fiction is made. A study of writing of Shaukat Siddiqui and his contemporaries prominent in fiction writing is under taken to point out the similarities and dissimilarities in respect of the formation of plots, events, characters and descriptions. In the sixth chapter the special elements of writing of Shaukat Siddqui are analyzed. The art of Shaukat Siddqui is examined to evaluate his contribution. In the seventh chapter the tradition of realism in Urdu fiction writing and its future potential are surveyed. The new tendencies in novel and story writing are analyzed.
