The Quran, the last revealed word of God, is the primary source of every Muslim’s faith and practice. It deals with all the subjects concerning human beings: wisdom, doctrine, worship, transactions, law, etc. but its basic theme is the relationship between God and His creatures. At the same time, it provides guidelines and detailed teachings for a just society.
The purpose of the Qur’an is to furnish guidance to mankind so they may be led along the path that would bring them to their Creator in a state of complete submission to Him, thus fulfilling the purpose of their own creation.
“This is a Book that We have revealed to thee that thou may bring mankind out of every kind of darkness into the light, by the command of their Lord, to the path of the Mighty, the Praiseworthy Allah, to Whom belongs whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth' [14:1,2]
For that purpose it draws attention to every type of phenomenon and thereby reveals vast treasures of profound truths, but all this is in pursuit of its appointed purpose, and must be viewed and appreciated in that context.
Once questioned about the ethical behaviour and character of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Hazrat Ayesha (RA) said that the holy prophet (peace be upon him) was a living proof of the truthfulness of the holy book as the Qur’an attributes could be seen in his person.
According to a verse of the holy Qur’an, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the best model for all humans. And like the holy Qur’an itself the Hadiths are and will remain quite safe and unchanged by the Grace of God. Any mischievous effort or evil design to play with the sacred scripts will be thwarted by the Providence Who will take care of them.
Tirade against Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)
Among abuses hurled at Islam over the past 14 centuries, the worst target of such invective, vulgar and gratuitous attacks has been the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself - particularly his family life. The antagonists portray the Prophet’s wives in the most indecent manner. These people know that the House against which they pour out their venom is the most revered by a Muslim holding even a grain of faith.
The reason for the selection
Hadith have been and would always remain a vital source of understanding the Islamic ideology. Almost all Muhadittin of the first and second century analysed the Isnad or other narrations on the basis of degree of veracity and reliability on the understanding or interpretation of the narrators. Hadiths have been classified according to the degree of reliability and include those classified as weak.
None of the Muhadittin worth his salt has vouched that they are infallible despite the fact that they discarded those they thought were not reliable at all. In the early days of Islam hypocrites mischievously narrated many fake Hadiths.
An important thing is to understand the logic and objectivity of any saying or action or practice rather than blind adherence. Not all Hadiths can be given the force of generalized law or a mandatory practice for all times to come. The same thing applies to different fatwas (edicts) and laws of Shariah.
I pray to Allah Almighty that He accept my humble effort and make it a source of enlightenment and guidance for students of religious studies. Allah may give me His heavenly reward for all my endeavours made in this respect.
