Abstract
The work embodied in this thesis consists of phytochemical investigation on four different medicinal plants Terminalia glaucescens Planchon., Pteleopsis hylodendron Mildbr., Cichorium intybus Linn. and Aegle marmelos Correa.

Part-A comprises the chemical investigation of T glaucescens, while part-B deals with studies on P. hylodendron. In part-C, the isolation of new compounds from C. intybus is described, while part-D deals with the chemical constituents of A. marmelos. A total of fifty-three secondary metabolites were isolated from these medicinal plants, out of which seven were found to be new.

Part-A :The phytochemical work on the stem bark of Terminalia glaucescens has resulted in the isolation of two new constituents terminalin A (69) and 2α,3β,19α,24-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-30-oic acid (70). In addition, nineteen known compounds friedelin (71), β-amyrin (72), palmitic acid (73), stearic acid (74), lupeol (75), β -sitosterol (76), stigmasterol (77), benzoic acid (78), betulinic acid (79), 2 α, 3 β, 19a-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (80), 2α, 3 β, 19 α, 23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (81), 2α, 3β, 6 β, 23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (82), 3, 4-methylenedioxy-3', 4'-O-methyl ellagic acid (83), 3, 3', 4'-tri-O-methyl ellagic acid (84), 3, 3', 4, 4'-tetra-O-methyl ellagic acid (85), 2α, 3β, 19α, 23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-O-D- β -glucopyranoside (86), 2 α, 3 β, 19 α, 24-tetrahydorxyolean-12-en-28-O-D- β-glucopyanoside (87), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside (88) and β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (89) were also isolated from the stem bark of T glaucescens.

Part-B :Part-B deals with isolation and characterization of chemical constituents of Pteleopsis hylodendron. Three new compounds were identified as bellericagenin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1†’2)-a-D-glucopyranosyl (90), hylodendroside-I (91) and hylodendroside-II (92). Another compound 2α, 3 β, 23-triacetoxy-19 α-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (93) was isolated for the first time from this plant. Along with this, β -carotene (94), P-sitosterol (76), stigmasterol (77), friedelin (71), lupeol (75), 3-epi-betulinic acid (95), 3, 3' -di-O-methyl ellagic acid (96), 3, 3', 4' -tri-O-methyl ellagic acid (84), 3, 4-methylenedioxy-3'-O-methyl ellagic acid (97), 2 α, 3 β, 19 α, 23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (81) and 2 α, 3 β, 19 α, 23, 24-pentahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (98) were also obtained.

Part-C :Part-C deals with the isolation and characterization of chemical constituents from Cichorium intybus. Two new compounds, cichoridiol (18α, 19β -20(30)-taraxasten-3β, 21α-diol) (99), and intybusoloid (17-epi-methyl-6-hydroxyangolensate) (100) were also isolated. Some of these compounds were tested for their enzyme inhibitory activity against prolyl endopeptidase, β-glucuronidase and α-glucosidase. In addition, eleven known compounds, such as friedelin (71), lupeol (75), β-sitosterol (76), stigmasterol (77), betulinaldehyde (101), betulinic acid (79), betulin (102), vanillic acid (103), syringic acid (104), 6,7 -dihydroxy-2H-benzapyran-2-one (105) and methyl- α-D-galactopyranoside (106) have also been isolated from this plant.

Part-D :Part-D deals with the phytochemical studies on Aegle marmelos. The known compounds isolated from this species include imperatorin (107), β-sitosterol (76), xanthotoxol (108), xanthotoxin (109), heraclenin (110) and conduritol A (111). Among them compounds 76, 110 and 111 were isolated for the first time from this plant.
