Abstract We report extensive new data on the odd parity Rydberg series of krypton and xenon using single colour two photon laser optogalvanic spectroscopy. In krypton the odd parity bound and autoionized Rydberg series are excited from the 4p55s[3/2]2 and 4p55s'[1/2]0 metastable levels respectively. A total ten odd parity 4p5nd[1/2]0,1. 4p5nd[3/2]2, 4p5nd[5/2]2,3' 4p5nd[7/2]3,4, 4p5ns[3/2]2, 4p5ns'[1/2]0 and unresolved 4p5nd'[3/2]2 (or 4p5nd'[5/2]2 ) Rydberg series are observed. The 4p5nd[1/2]0, 4p5nd[7/2]4' 4p5nd'[3/2]2 or 4p5nd'[5/2]2 and 4p5ns'[1/2]0 series for high n values are reported for the first time. The 4p5nd[1/2]0, 4p5nd[7/2]4' 4p5ns[3/2]2, 4p5nd'[3/2]2 or (4p5nd'[5/2]2) and 4p5ns,[1/2]0 Rydberg series have been observed up to n = 23, 49, 44, 39 and 36 respectively. The interchannel interaction among the overlapping Rydberg series has been studied using the multichannel quantum defect theory for J = 0, 2 and 3. In addition, the two photon parity forbidden Rydberg series 4p5np[1/2]1 excited from the 4p55s[3/2]2 level is also observed. In xenon the odd parity bound Rydberg series are excited from the 5p56s[3/2]2 metastable level. A total of eight odd parity 5p5nd[1/2]0,1' 5p5nd[3/2]2, 4p5nd[5/2]2,3' 5p5nd[7/2]3,4 and 5p5ns[3/2]2 Rydberg series are observed. The 5p5nd[1/2]0, 5p5nd[7/2]4 and 5p5ns[3/2]2 series for high n values are reported for the first time. The 5p5nd[1/2]0, 5psnd[7/2]4 and 5p5ns[3/2]2 series have been observed up to n = 21, 47 and 44. We have also observed an even parity (two photon parity forbidden). 5p5np[5/2]2 Rydberg series excited from the 5p56s[3/2]2 metastable level. The multichannel quantum defect theory analysis for the odd parity bound levels of J = 0, 2 and 3 has been performed. Besides the two photon Rydberg series we have also observed a number of one photon transitions excited from the 5p55d configuration in the reported spectral region. Some of them can be grouped into 5p5nf Rydberg series. The 5p5nf series have been observed up to n = 31.
