Abstract  

The effect of various Zn levels applied by different methods on rice grown in soils with different physicochemical characteristics was studied in the present investigation. Chapter-l presents a general introduction of various problems of soil Zn and its availability to plants. Chapter-2 deals with short review of some aspects of Zn behavior in different soils and factors affecting Zn availability to plants. Methods of Zn application have been described in detail. Analytical techniques used in the present study, a short description of the sampling sites and some of the physicochemical characteristics of the soils have been dealt with in chapter-3. The effect of different levels of Zn application to soil on the yield and quality of rice has been presented in chapter-4. "Rice response in terms of yield parameters, grain and straw yields, zinc content before and after flowering in rice leaf, before flowering and after harvest in soil and grain and straw were significantly affected by the application of zinc sulphate. A progressive decrease in P content of straw, P and starch contents of paddy and increase in N, K and Zn content of paddy and straw was observed with an increase in the level of zinc. It was found that 10 kg Zn ha-1 to soil was an optimum dose for rice crop in these soils. Zinc fertilization applied by broad cast method gave the highest grain and straw yields in Tikken series and the lowest in Ramak soil series. The diversity in response to zinc fertilization in some soils was noted. The interaction between the treatments and soil series were found significant except for phosphorous and starch. Chapter-5 represents the effect of Zn application on the yield and quality of rice by root dip method. The rice response in terms of yield components, yield, soil Zn and chemical composition of the tissue was statistically significant. It was found t11at 1.0 % ZnSO4 was an optimum dose for rice crop in these soils. The diversity in response to zinc fertilization in some soils was also noted. The interaction between the treatments and soil series were significant except for phosphorous and starch. The effect of different levels of Zn application by foliar method on the yield and quality of rice is studied in chapter-6. It was noted that foliar application of Zn had significant effect on the yield components, straw and paddy yields, soil Zn and chemical composition of tissue. It was found that 0.20% ZnSO4 by foliar method was an optimum dose for rice crop in these soils. The diversity in response to zinc fertilization in some soils was noted. The interaction between the treatments and soil series was also significant except for phosphorous and starch. The comparative effectiveness of different methods of Zn application on the yield and quality of rice has been described in chapter- 7. Zinc application by any of the methods increased significantly the number of tillers, panicles, spikelets, plant height, 1000-paddy weight and straw and grain yield over control. Soil application of Zn gave better results than foliar and root dipping application. Non-significant difference was observed among the methods of Zn application in most of the cases. Maximum soil Zn concentration was found in plots with soil Zn application as compared to foliar or root dipping application. In chapter-8, the experimental results and their general conclusions along with suggestion for further development of this work are described.
