Abstract This study represents the first serious attempt to identify the nature and spatial pattern of commercial functions in the planned neighborhoods of Karachi. The four selected residential neighborhoods of Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, the P.E.C.H.S. and Kehkashan (Clifton) witnessed faster pace of development in respect of commercial functions in late seventies and early eighties. That explains the reason why the years 1985 and 2000/2002 have been selected for the study of changes in the commercial structure of these neighborhoods. The information, both qualitative and quantitative, utilized in the study of the commercial structure has been gathered through extensive field surveys conducted by me. The study utilizes various quantitative cartographic techniques in the analysis of primary data collected in the field. These have been outlined in chapter 2 of the thesis. Modem methods like GIS and computer assisted cartographic techniques have been used in this study. As a result of this study, it has been possible to pinpoint the changes that have occurred in the commercial structure of these four planned residential neighborhoods over the past three to four decades. This study also provides an idea of some of the recent trends in the evolution of commercial functions and their locational patterns in the study areas, both of which accord with modem trends noted elsewhere in the case of Western cities.
