Abstract
In order to understand the behaviour of various salicylates like 2-hydroxybenzoie acid,2-acetoxybenzoic acid, 2-hydroxy-4-aminobenzoic acid (sod. salt), 2-hydroxy-5-sulphobenzoic acid and 2-hydroxy-3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid with different transition metal cations e.g, Cu++,Ag+,Zn++, Cd++,Hg++, Ni++, and UO++, their stoichiometric studies were carried out at different pH values using Jobā€™s method of continuous variation. The stability constants of these metal derivatives were also calculated. by the same method. The chelation behaviour of these salicylates in solution were studied and followed by the synthesis of their metal derivatives, which were characterized by the elemental analysis and Infrared spectra. The metal contents in these complexes was assayed by atomic absorption technique. The thermal stabilities of chelates; were determined by thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA).Purity of the new compounds was further ascertained through qualitative x-ray diffraction. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of chelates were tested against strain of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, 6571 (16) NCTC and Aspergillus nigar by cylinder plate diffusion method. Some of these metal derivatives were also tested against two strains of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC, 6338 and Escherchia coli ATCC, 8739 by agar plate diffusion method.
