Abstract
Stuttering is primarily a disorder of the temporal aspects of speech, not of articulatery, phonatory, or symbolic process. The present study is the first attempt in Pakistan to study differences in personalities of stutterers with different degrees of stuttering.

It was hypothesized that,€ Personality differences would be found on various subscales of MMPI among stutterers with a varying degree of stuttering" .A purposive sample of three hundred (300) subjects w 50 rated in the six groups according to the severity of stuttering, on the Stuttering Severity Instrument for Children and Adults (S categorization of groups was: non-stutterers, very mild stutterers, mild stutterers, moderate stutterers, severe stutterers and very severe stutterers.

The factors controlled while collecting the data were: Education, No previous psychiatric consultation, No previous speech therapy, No other speech disorder and No exams withen the next three months.

After the assessment of severity of stuttering, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was administered to assess the personality traits of the subjects. On obtaining the raw scores, they were converted to T-scores from the conversion tables in the MMPI manual. Wilcoxcon test, Kruskal-Wallis and an edited version of the Direct Discriminant Functional Analyses were applied to analyze the results.

The .results partially supported the hypothesis "personality differences would be found on various subscales of the MMPI among subjects with a varying degree of stuttering". Significant differences were found on the Kruskal-Wallis test (Prob>Chisq) on Scales F, Scale K and Scale Hy. On Scale L and Scale Hs the results approaced significance.
