Abstract
The present study was aimed at exploring the effect of approach and avoidance interventions of the therapists on (a) hostility bids (b) hostility bids with hostility anxiety of the patients (c) their effect on the patients remaining in or (d) terminating psychotherapy

Seven therapists of the Institute of Clinical Psychology, University of Karachi, participated in this study. 56 audio-cassettes of 28 patients (first two tape recorded therapy sessions of two remainers and two terminators of each therapist) were subjected to content analysis. Inter-scorer reliability between the author and the other scorer yielded satisfactory results

Sign test was applied to determine increase and decrease in the patients bids of hostility and hostility with hostility anxiety, in response to the therapists approach and avoidance interventions

Mann-whitney U test was applied to find out the statistical difference between the remainers and terminators

It was found that the approach interventions of the therapists elicited further expressions of (a) hostility and (b) hostility with hostility anxiety of the patients, whereas with avoidance interventions of the therapists, such expressions tended to decrease. It was also found that with approach interventions of the therapists to such expressions, the patients tended to remain longer in psychotherapy, whereas with avoidance interventions of the therapists to such expressions, the patients tended to terminate psychotherapy
