The isolation and structure elucidation of alkaloids of Rhazya stricta have led to the isolation of fourteen new alkaloids. The most interesting of these are those, possessing a novel seco ajmalinoid skeleton. The isolated new alkaloids are named as rhazimine, rhazicine, isorhazicine, strictamine-N-oxide, 2-methoxy-1, 2-dihydrorhazimine, rhazisidine, strcitisdine , leuconolam, strictine, bisstrictidine, strictigine, rhazigine, 3, 14-dehydrorhazigine, 16ÃÂÃÂ¢ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ-hydroxyrhazimine, Recent spectroscopic techniques were employed to determine their structures, including two dimensional NMR experiments, eg. COSy, NOESY, 2D J-resolved and proton homodecoupling experiments; GASPE and DEPT experiments were carried out determine multiplicity of each carbon atom. Extensive NOE difference studies were carried out to determine relative stereochemistry at various asymmetric centers. Biosynthetic routes to some isolated alkaloids are also proposed. A part of this thesis comprised studies on the synthesis of pyridyl indoles.
