Abstract
A newly isolated strain of Penicillium martensii biourge was selected for biochemical studies. The identification of this strain was confirmed by commonwealth mycological institute, kew, Surrey, England. The strain was catalogued by the Institute under No I.M.I. 125917

A new metabolite which is produced by this strain of P. martensii, Biourge was isolated. The structure of the metabolite was determined using sophisticated chemical techniques. The metabolite was named ‘amudol’. The structure of this metabolite is shown below: (Amudol)

Amudol was found to possess antibacterial activities as described in Table-1 In addition to amudol, another important metabolite, namely griseofulvin was also obtained from strain No. I.M.I. 125917 of Penicillium martensii, Biourge. This is a well known antifungal antibiotic

Comparative studies were undertaken to develop media for optimal production of griseofilvin and amudol.

The results showed that medium “C” having the following composition is most suitable for the production of graseofulvin

Composition of medium ‘C’ was as follows: Glucose 50g; NaNo3 3g; KH2PO4 1g; 0.5g; MgSo4 7H2O 0.5g; FeSO4 7H2O O.01g; carrot extract of 200g carrots. Distilled water to make upto 1 litre

This gave higher yield of griseofulvin as compared to other media tested

Similarly, Medium ‘A’ was composed of:- Molasses 120g; KH2PO4 0.5g; corn starch 20g; NaNo3 3g; MgSo4 7H2O 0.25g; ZnSo4 7H2O 0.44g; glucose 3g; corrot extract of 200g of carrots; distilled water to make upto 1 liter, gave the higher yield of amudol

Studies were also done of the cell-free extract prepared from the mycelium of P.martensii, Biourge. The results may be summarized as under:- 1. Griseofulvin was produced when 6-methyl salicylic acid was added to the cell-free extract 2. Amudol and dehydrogriseofulvin were produced when sodium salicylate was added to the cell-free extract. 3. None of the above mentioned metabolites were produced when orcinol alone or in combination with sodium chloride was added to the cell-free system
