STUDIES ON THE FAMILIES LONGIDORIDAE, TRICHODORIDAE AND DOLICHODORIDAE WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO VIRUS VECTOR NEMATODES OF PAKISTAN

Abstract

Systematic studies on the nematodes belonging to the families Longidoridae, (Thorne, 1935) Meyl, 1961, Trichodoridae (Thorne, 1935) Siddiqi, 1961 and Dolichodoridae (Chitwood in Chitwood & Chitwood 1950) Skarbilovich, 1959 found in Pakistan have been carried out, giving an up-to-date list of species of this group. An analysis of more than 800 plants and soil samples collected from cereals, vegetables, fruits, herbaceous plants and other crops of economic importance growing in various localities of Pakistan has been carried out. It revealed the occurrence of a large number of Longidorids, Trichodorids and Dolichodorids nematodes. Of these 10 are new viz., Tyoenchorhynchus swatiensis Nasira, Shahina & Maqbool, 1991; Xiphinema karachiense Nasira, Firoza & Maqbool, 1992; Paralongidorus lemoni Nasira, Shahina, Firoza & Maqbool, 1993, Paratrichodorus psidii Nasira & Maqbool, 1994; Paratrichodorus faisalabadensis Nasira & Maqbool, 1994; Xiphinema cynodontis Nasira & Maqbool, 1995; Xiphinema pakistanensis n.xp; Longidorus trapezoids Nasira & Maqbool, 1995; Tylenchorhynchus gossypii Nasira & Maqbool, 1996 and male of Xiphinema oxycaudatum Lamberti & Bleve-Zacheo, 1979. Besides these, 15 known species viz., Enchodelus marcrodorus (de Man, 1980) Thorne, 1939; Paralongidorus major Verma, 1973; Paratrichodorus mirzai (Siddiqi, 1960) Siddiqi, 1974; Paratrichodorus renifer Siddiqi, 1974; Xiphinema basiri (male) Siddiqi, 1959; X. bergeri Luc, 1973; X. bolandium Commans & Heyns, 1985; X. machoni Hunt, 1980; X. pachydermum Sturhan, 1983; X. rotundatum Schuurmans Stekhoven & Teunissen, 1938; Xiphinema thornei Lamberti & Golden, 1986; Longidorus afridorus africanus Merny, 1966; Longidorus pisi Edward, Misra & Singh, 1964; and Tylenchorhynchus elegans Siddiqi, 1961 have been described and iilustrated.
