Abstract
This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part describes the studies on the chemical constituents of Psoralea plicata. In the course of our studies of this plant five new compounds have been isolated and characterized. In addition, six known compounds have also been reported for the first time from this plant

The second part of the thesis describes studies on the chemical constituents of Pentatropis spiralis (syn: Asclepias spiralis) which have led to the isolation and characterization of four new terpenoids. In addition, four known triterpenoids have also been reported for the first time from this plant

The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectral data (Mass, UV, IR, 1H-NMR, COSY-45, J-resolved, NOE, 13C-NMR, DEPT and hetero-COSY) as well as on the chemical studies. The general introduction of this thesis includes a brief account of biogenetic approach to various classes of triterpenoids, phenylpropanoids, phynylcoumarins and quinines. One the other hand, the introductions of part-A and Part-B give comprehensive reviews of earlier research carried out on the chemical constituents of Psoralea and Pentatropis (Asclepias) species
