Abstract

The study of the helminth parasites of fresh water turtles, tortoises and snakes in west Pakistan has not been done so far. Such studies have however been extensively done in other countries of the world, particularly in India. The present worker therefore embarked upon the study of tromatode and nematode parasites of some of the commonly found species of turtles and tortoises, Lissemys punctata punctata, Hardella thurgi and kachuga smithi and the snake species Cerberus rhynchopus. During the course of investigations 230 specimens of host species were collected alive from Indus river and the adjoining lakes in the lower sindh area As a result of this study, trematode parasites of the families. Plagiorchiidae, spirorchiidae, Pronocephalidae, Paramphistomidae, Cythoootylidae, and Cophalogonimidae, and genera Astiotrema (A. reniferum. A. hoshiarpurium, A. indica, A. loossii, A. rami, A. natli, A. matthaii), Glossimetra (G. orientalies) Enchclobrephus (E. robustum). Schizamphistomoides (one new species) Neopronocephalus (one new species) Cephalogonimus (C. mehrai, C. indicus, C. kumarus. C. mukeriius, and (one new species), Plasmiorchis (P. hardellii), Tromarhynchus (three new species), Encyclometra (E. colubrimurorum, E. Japonica), and Gogatea (two new species), were recorded of the nematode families Atractidae, Camallanidae, Spiruridae and the genera Monhysterides (M. kachugae), Camallanus (C. Kachugae), Spiroxys (S. torouata) wer recorded. Of these 10 genera and 18 species of trematoda are new record for west Paksitan and 8 species are new to science and 3 genera and 3 species of nematodes have been recorded for the first time from west Pakistan
