Abstract

This thesis presents the work on the chemical constituents of Withania somnifera, Rhazya stricta and Mitragyna Parvifolia. Investigation of each plant is discussed in separate sections Section-A It describes the studies on the chemical constituents of the whole plant of withania somnifera, the work has led to the isolation of five steroidal lactones, of these five three were new (i, ii, iii,), while the remaining two were reported ones (iv, v),. (i) withasomidienone (ii) sommnifericine (Heterocycles in press) (iii) 2,3-Dehydrosomnifericine (Heterocycles, in press) (iv) 2,3-Dihyehowithaferin-A (v) 27-Dehydrosywithefericine-A Section-B It deals with the investigations on the roots of Rhazya stricta. Seven indole alkaloids were isolated, out of which three were new (I, ii, iii), one was new from the genus Rhazya (iv), while remaining three were already reported from this plant (i) Saifine (Nat. Prod. Lett, 1995, 5, pp245-253) (ii) Saifinine (iii) Isosaifinine (iv) Pseudoyohimbine (v) Strictanol (vi) 15, 20, 15’, 20’-Tetrahydrosecamine (vii) 16R, 16’-Decarbomethoxytetrahydrosecamine Section-C It describes the isolation of six compounds from the stem bark of Mitragyna parvifolia. Three of them were found new from the genus Mitragyna (I, ii, iii) while remaining three were reported ones (iv, v, vi). (i) Scopoletin (ii) Thermophyllin (iii) Daucosterol (iv) Quinovic acid (v) Mitraphyllin (vi)β-Sitosterol
