Abstract
The work embodied in this dissertation is mainly concerned with the isolation and characterization of chemical constituents from three terrestrial medicinal plants. The isolated compounds whether new or have been previously in the literature, were characterized by suing various sophisticated sophisticated spectroscopic techniques available at 5this institution.

The dissertation is divided in two parts dealing with chemistry of two tiliaceae plant, and one labiatae plant of Pakistan. In Part-A the chemical and biological analysis of corchorus depressus L. and corchorus trilocularis L. is described, which belongs to the family tiliaceae. Part-B deals with the chemical and biological analysis of mentha royleana, which belongs to the family lamiaceae (Labiatae).

Part-A Chemical and biological analysis of Corchorus species: The studies on corchorus depressus L. resulted in the isolation and characterization of four new constituents, out of these, two compounds contain cycloartenenol glycoside skeleton and two have flavonoid glycoside skeleton. In addition to these new constituents, four known compounds have been isolated and identified from this species.

Part-B Chemical and biological analysis of mentha royleana: part-B deals with the chemical studies on mentha royleana. The present work has resulted I the isolation of five known compounds. These compounds include, Lupeol(1), oleanolic acid(2), artemitin(3), jaceidin(4) and 6-hydroxy kaemferol-3,5,7-trimethylether(5)
