Abstract This Ph. D. dissertation is divided into four parts, focusing on the bioprospecting studies on four medicinally important plants of Nepalese origin. Part B of the thesis contains the b oprospectig studies on sonchus wightinaus DC. That resulted in the isolation of five known secondary metabolites. The isolation was carried out by following the results of acetyl-cholinesterase inhibition assays and phytotoxicity assay on Lemna minor. Most of the fractions were found to be active in the bioassay screenings. The known compounds were identified as β-amyrin (18), β-amyrin acetate(19), β-amyrinone(20), β-sitosterol (21), and β-sitosterol glucoside(22). Part C describes the bioprospecting study on paris polyphylla smith. During this study, six known compounds przewalskinone B (23), polyphyllin-C(24), polyphyllin-D(25), saponin-1 (26), stigmasterol(27) glucoside(28) were obtained. The tyrosinase inhibitory, antilieshmanial and cytotoxicity (on human neutrophils) assays were carried out on these compounds. Part D. This part includes the results of phytochemical study on a medicinal plant, tinospora cordifolia miers., which afforded three known compounds, cycloeuphhordenol(29), 1-cyclohexy1-11-heneicosanone(30). Most of the fractions of the plant extract as well as compound 31 showed potent to moderate antioxidant activities.
