Abstract
The work presented in this Ph.D dissertation is divided in three parts. Part-A deals with phytochemical studies on suregada multiflora, a medicinal plant of Bangladesh, Part-B deals with photochemical studies on Verbascum sinaiticum, while microbial transformations of some natural compounds are discussed in Part-C.

Part-A, This part of thesis deals with photochemical investigation on the leaf extracts of Suregada multiflora. The crude extract of Suregada multiflora was found to possess selective and significant cytotoxicity against a 60-cell line tumor panels at the isolation of eleven different tetracyclic diterpene lactores 1-11, which are the members of a rare class of abiatene diterpene lactrones along with a flavonoid glycoside and a lignan Compounds 7-11 (Gelomulide F, D, E, A and G), isolated from suregada multiflora were evaluated in the primary anticancer assay of 3-cell lines at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Bethesda, USA. Out of them compound 9 (Gelomulide E) showed promising activity against the NCI-H460 (Lung) cell line, with a growth inhibition of over 85% at concentration of 5X10-5M

New diterpene lactones from suregada multiflora Six new compounds (1-6) have been isolated from the Suregada multiflora. Among them compounds 1 and 2 contain an epoxy linkage between C-8 and C-14, whereas compounds 3-5 were identified as 8-14-dihydroxy analogues of diterpene lactones. Compound 6 contains one additional epoxy ring between C-11 and C-12
